Potash alum dissolves in water to give a/an

    A)  acidic solution of \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]

    B)  alkaline solution

    C)  acidic solution of \[HCl\]

    D)  neutral solution

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

\[{{K}_{2}}(S{{O}_{4}}).A{{l}_{2}}{{(S{{O}_{4}})}_{3}}.24{{H}_{2}}O\] gives \[{{K}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+A{{l}_{2}}{{(S{{O}_{4}})}_{3}}+24{{H}_{2}}O\]. \[A{{l}_{2}}{{(S{{O}_{4}})}_{3}}\] undergoes hydrolysis to give \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] \[A{{l}_{2}}{{(S{{O}_{4}})}_{3}}+6{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}2Al{{(OH)}_{3}}+3{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]due to which aqueous solution of potash alum is acidic.
