Near the top of blast furnace, used for the extraction of iron, the purified oxide ore is reduced to spongy iron by:

    A) \[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    B)        \[CO\]

    C) limestone

    D)        aluminium

    E) hydrogen

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In the extraction of Fe in the blast furnace, the purified oxide ore is reduced to spongy iron by CO at the top of blast furnace, as follows \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+3CO\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  spongy \\  \,\,\,\,\,iron \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{2Fe}}\,+3C{{O}_{2}}\] \[CO\]acts as a reducing agent. It occurs in reduction zone at\[400-700{}^\circ C\].
