  • question_answer
    If\[{{x}^{2}}+px+q=0\]has the roots\[\alpha \]and\[\beta \]then the value of\[{{(\alpha -\beta )}^{2}}\]is equal to

    A)  \[{{p}^{2}}-4q\]

    B)  \[{{({{p}^{2}}-4q)}^{2}}\]

    C)  \[{{p}^{2}}+4q\]

    D)         \[{{({{p}^{2}}+4q)}^{2}}\]

    E)  \[{{q}^{2}}-4q\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    \[\because \]\[\alpha \]and\[\beta \]are roots of \[{{x}^{2}}-px+q=0\] \[\because \] \[\alpha +\beta =p,\alpha \beta =q\] \[\therefore \] \[{{(\alpha -\beta )}^{2}}={{(\alpha +\beta )}^{2}}-4\alpha \beta ={{p}^{2}}-4q\]
