  • question_answer
    If the distance between (2, 3) and\[(-\text{ }5,\text{ }2)\] is equal to the distance between\[(x,\text{ }2)\]and (1,3), then the values of \[x\]are

    A)  \[-6,8\]

    B)  \[6,8\]

    C)  \[-8,6\]

    D)         \[-7,7\]

    E)  \[-8,-6\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    We have, Distance between (2, 3) and\[(-\text{ }5,\text{ }2)\] = Distance between\[(x,2)\]and (1, 3) \[\sqrt{{{(2+5)}^{2}}+{{(3-2)}^{2}}}=\sqrt{{{(x-1)}^{2}}+{{(2-3)}^{2}}}\] Squaring both sides, we have \[49+1={{x}^{2}}-2x+1+1\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[{{x}^{2}}-2x-48=0\] \[x=-6,8\]
