  • question_answer
A buffer solution contains 0.1 mole of sodium acetate dissolved in \[1000\text{ }c{{m}^{3}}\] of 0.1 M acetic acid. To the above buffer solution, 0.1 mole of Sodium acetate is further added and dissolved. The pH of the resulting buffer is

    A)  \[p{{K}_{a}}\]

    B)  \[p{{K}_{a}}+2\]

    C)  \[p{{K}_{a}}-\log \,2\]

    D)  \[p{{K}_{a}}+\log \,2\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    \[pH=p{{K}_{a}}=\frac{[salt]}{[acid]}\] When extra 0.1 mole sodium acetate is added \[\left[ salt \right]=0.2\text{ }mol\text{ }d{{m}^{-3}}\] \[\left[ acid \right]=0.1\text{ }mol\text{ }d{{m}^{-3}}\] \[\therefore \]  \[pH=p{{K}_{a}}+\log \,\frac{[0.2]}{[0.1]}\]                 \[pH=p{{K}_{a}}+\log \,\,2\]
