  • question_answer
A sound source is moving towards a stationary listener with 1 / 10th of the speed of the sound. The ratio of apparent to real speed will be:

    A)  \[{{\left( \frac{11}{10} \right)}^{2}}\]

    B)  \[{{\left( \frac{9}{10} \right)}^{2}}\]

    C)   \[\frac{10}{9}\]

    D)  \[\frac{11}{10}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

     Given : Velocity of listener =0 Velocity of source, \[a=\frac{1}{10}\times \upsilon =0.1\upsilon \](where \[\upsilon \] is the velocity of sound) From the Dopplers effect the apparent frequency is given by \[n=\left( \frac{\upsilon }{\upsilon -a} \right)n=\left( \frac{\upsilon }{\upsilon -0.1\upsilon } \right)n\] \[\frac{n}{n}=\frac{10}{9}\]
