pH of a solution produced when an aqueous solution of pH 6 is mixed with an equal volume of an aqueous solution of pH 3 is about:

    A)  \[3.3\]

    B)  \[4.3\]

    C)  \[4.0\]

    D)  \[4.5\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Aqueous solution of pH 6 means, \[[{{H}^{+}}]={{10}^{-6}}\]: Aq. solution of pH 3 means, \[[{{H}^{+}}]={{10}^{-3}}\] Aq. solutions of both pH are mixed in equal volume, hence \[[{{H}^{+}}]=\frac{{{10}^{-6}}+{{10}^{-3}}}{2}\] \[={{10}^{-6}}\left( \frac{1+{{10}^{3}}}{2} \right)\] or \[={{10}^{-6}}\times \frac{1001}{2}={{10}^{-6}}\times 550\] \[pH=-\log [{{H}^{+}}]\] \[=6-\log 550\] \[=6-2.7404\] \[=3.2596\] \[=3.3\]
