  • question_answer
Yellow light is used in single slit diffraction experiment with slit width 0.6 mm. If yellow light is replaced by X-rays, then the pattern will reveal that:

    A)  no diffraction pattern

    B)  that the central maxima narrower

    C)  less number of fringes

    D)  more number of fringes

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

To see the diffraction pattern, wavelength of radiation must be of the order of the dimensions of the slit. But here slit width 0.6 mm is very much large in comparison to      wavelength      of      X-ray ( \[\lambda =1\overset{\text{o}}{\mathop{\text{A}}}\,\]or \[{{10}^{-7}}\] mm).   Therefore   no diffraction pattern is observed.
