CET Karnataka Medical CET - Karnataka Medical Solved Paper-2003

  • question_answer
A gaseous carbon compound is soluble in dilute \[HCl\]. The solution on treating with NaN02 gives off nitrogen leaving behind a solution which smells of wood spirit. The carbon compound is:

    A)  \[HCHO\]

    B)  \[CO\]

    C)  \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}N{{H}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

It is methyl amine which, being basic, dissolves in dilute \[HCl\]. It with \[NaN{{O}_{2}}\]evolves nitrogen gas leaving behind methyl alcohol which has smell of wood-spirit. \[C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}\xrightarrow{HCl}C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}.HCl\] \[C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}+HN{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{NaN{{O}_{2}}/HCl}\underset{+{{N}_{2}}\uparrow +{{H}_{2}}O}{\mathop{\underset{methyl\,alcohol}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}OH}}\,}}\,\]
