In Goldschmidt aluminothermic process, thermite contains:

    A)  3 parts of \[A{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\]and 4 parts of \[Al\].

    B)  3 parts of \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\]and 2 parts of \[Al\]

    C)  3 parts of \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] and 1 part of \[Al\]

    D)  1 part of \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] and 1 part of \[Al\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Goldschmidt in 1905 discovered a method for the reduction of haematite \[(F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}})\] with aluminium metal. The process is known as alumino thermic process, as in this process, large heat is produced. In this, \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] and aluminium are taken in \[3:1\]ratio and this mixture, known as thermite, is ignited to initiate the reaction, when \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\] is reduced to molten Fe. \[2Al+F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\xrightarrow{{}}A{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+\underset{molten}{\mathop{2Fe+3230kJ}}\,\]
