CET Karnataka Medical CET - Karnataka Medical Solved Paper-2003

  • question_answer
\[N{{H}_{3}}\] and \[HCl\] gas are introduced simultaneously from the two ends of a long tube. A white ring of \[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] appears first:

    A)  nearer to the \[HCl\] end

    B)  at the centre of the tube

    C)  throughout the tube

    D)  nearer to the \[N{{H}_{3}}\] end

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

White ring of \[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\] will appear nearer to the \[HCl\] end. The rcason is that \[HCl\] (mol. wt = 36.5) is heavier than \[N{{H}_{3}}\] (mol. wt = 17). Hence, according to Grahams law of diffusion, the rate of diffusion of NHs will be higher than that of \[HCl\]. \[\frac{{{r}_{1}}}{{{r}_{2}}}=\sqrt{\frac{{{M}_{2}}}{{{M}_{1}}}}\]
