The spectrum obtained from the chromosphere of the sun at the time of total solar eclipse is:

    A)  line emission spectrum

    B)  band emission spectrum

    C)  continuous emission spectrum

    D)  line absorption spectrum

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Chromosphere (sphere of colour) is the outer region of the sun. Just below the chromosphere lies the photosphere (sphere of light). The density of gases decreases with altitude near the chromosphere.  The temperature of chromosphere is lower than that of photosphere. The photosphere emits continuous spectrum and when this passes through the chromosphere, absorption takes place and these absorption lines are observed as dark lines ill the solar spectrum. During a total solar eclipse, when the light from the photosphere is completely cut off, the chromosphere is visible to us. Hence, the line absorption spectrum with a continuous background is visible during a total solar eclipse.
