The main function of lacteals in the human small intestine is the absorption of:

    A)  glucose and vitamins

    B)  amino acids and glucose

    C)  water and vitamins

    D)  fatty acids and glycerol

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Mucosa, the innermost layer of wall of intestine is produced into millions of microscopic folds or finger like projections called Villi. The inner core of villi has a network of blood capillaries and also a network of lymphatic vessels, largest of which is the - central lacteal. All absorbable substances either pass passively or actively into intestinal epithelial cells from lumen of intestine. From intestinal cells they further diffuse into blood capillaries or lymphatic vessels for transport and distribution throughout the body. Fatty acids and glycerols are reconstructed with in intestinal epithelial cells into chylomicrons (water soluble fat droplets) by combining with cholesterol and phospholipids. These droplets because of their large size (150 um) are unable to enter directly into blood capillaries and instead pass into the lacteals, in the villi core. Lymphatic system transports these fat droplets through out the body and they finally reach blood when lymphatic system drains into circulatory system, (by left thoracic duct into subclavian vein).
