Which of the following are secretions produced by the spermatozoa at the time of fertilization?

    A)  Fertilizin and antifertilizin

    B)  Antifertilizin and spermlysin

    C)  Fertilizin and spermlysin

    D)  Only spermlysin

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

At the time of fertilization the sperm secretes sperm lysins and antifertilizin. In contact with the surface of egg covering, the acrosome of the sperm releases its contained hydrolytic enzymes called sperm lysins which bring about the acrosomal reaction. Hyaluronidase dissolves the cementing substance of corona cells resulting in their separation. Corona penetrating enzymes bring about degeneration of corona cells. Acrosin or zona lysin brings about degeneration of zona pellucida, Having way for the compatibility reaction. Due to the action of these enzymes plasma membrance of sperm fuses with that of secondary oocyte. Antifertilizin reacts with fertilizin of ovum. This reaction is species specific, as only fertilizin and antifertilizin of same species interact. When compatibility of species is established, fertilization cone or cone of reception is formed, after which sperm head contents enter ovoum.
