In the homeostatic control of blood sugar level, which organs function respectively as modulator and effector?

    A)  Liver and islets of Langerhans

    B)  Hypothalamus and liver

    C)  Hypothalamus and islets of langerhans

    D)  Islets of langerhans and hypothalamus

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Normal concentration of glucose in blood is about 100 mg/100mL. It increases after a carbohydrate rich food, than the secretion of insulin increases. It increases the permeability of all cells for glucose except that of brain cells, and RBCs. The brain cell and RBCs are already highly permeable to glucose. After taking more glucose from blood the cells utilize it for energy production. Consequently the basal metabolic rate and RNA and protein synthesis increases in cells. Simultaneously glycogenesis (synthesis of glycogen from glucose) in liver and muscles and lipogenesis (synthesis of fat) in adipose tissues also increase.
