    Guttation is mainly due to

    A)  root pressure

    B)  imbibition

    C)  osmosis

    D)  transpiration

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Guttation is exudation of liquid drops from the edges of leaves. Exudation may sometime occur from stem through the scars of leaves and lenticels. It occurs through specialized structures called hydathodes which are present generally at the tip or margin of leaves. Guttation is caused due to root pressure. When the absorption of water exceeds that of the transpiration, hydrostatic pressure is built up in xylem ducts. As a result, water is pushed in the xylem ducts and come out through the hydathodes.
