Which one of the following is not the function of insulin?

    A)  Initiates the conversion of glycogen to glucose

    B)  Initiates the formation of hepatic glycogen from excess of glucose

    C)  Increases the permeability of cell membrane to glucose

    D)  Increases the oxidation of glucose in the cells

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Insulin is the hormone, controlling the amount of blood sugar, which is secreted by the \[\text{ }\!\!\beta\!\!\text{ -}\]cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin (i) increases the permeability of all cells for glucose several times, except that of brain cells and RBCs. (ii) stimulates the conversion of glucose into glycogen in the liver and muscles (iii) promotes glycolysis of glucose in all cells, ie, oxidation of glucose.
