    Mosses and ferns are

    A)  Thallophytes of plant kingdom

    B)  Angiosperms of plant kingdom

    C)  Gymnosperms of plant kingdom

    D)  Amphibians of plant kingdom

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: Mosses and ferns predominantly grow in humid environment. Both ferns and mosses depend on water for fertilization. Therefore, they are called amphibians of plant kingdom. However, mosses show lack of vascular tissues thus they show greater dependence on amphibious environment. Fern sporophytes which are dominant in life cycle have well developed vascular tissues and produce resistant spores thus they show evolution towards true land plants. Thus, it is better suited to call only bryophytes like mosses as plant amphibians.
