  • question_answer
\[5.5\text{ }mg\]of nitrogen gas dissolves in \[180g\]of  water at \[273K\]and one atm pressure due to nitrogen gas. The mole fraction of nitrogen in \[180g\]of water at 5 atm nitrogen pressure is approximately

    A)  \[1\times {{10}^{-6}}\]

    B)  \[1\times {{10}^{-5}}\]

    C)  \[1\times {{10}^{-3}}\]

    D)  \[1\times {{10}^{-4}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    : Solubility of a gas \[\propto \] mole fraction \[^{n}{{N}_{2}}=\frac{5.5\times {{10}^{-3}}}{28}=1.96\times {{10}^{-4}}\] at 1 am Now, p \[\propto \] mole fraction then at 5 atm, the mole fraction will increase 5 times. Hence, \[5\times 1.96\times {{10}^{-4}}=9.8\times {{10}^{-4}}\] \[=10\times {{10}^{-4}}=1.0\times {{10}^{-3}}\]
