CET Karnataka Medical CET - Karnataka Medical Solved Paper-2015

  • question_answer
\[100c{{m}^{3}}\]of \[1M\text{ }C{{H}_{3}}COOH\]was mixed with \[100\text{ }c{{m}^{3}}\]of \[2M\text{ }C{{H}_{3}}OH\]to form an ester. The change in the initial rate if each solution is diluted with equal volume of water would be

    A)  4 times

    B)  0.25 times

    C)  2 times

    D)  0.5 times.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    : \[\underset{1M}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}COOH}}\,+\underset{2M}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}OH}}\,\to C{{H}_{3}}COOC{{H}_{3}}+{{H}_{2}}O\] \[{{r}_{1}}=k[C{{H}_{3}}COOH][C{{H}_{3}}OH]=k(1)(2)=2k\] When solution is diluted with equal volume of water, concentration is reduced to half. \[\therefore \] \[{{r}_{2}}=k\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)\left( \frac{2}{2} \right)=\frac{k}{2}\] \[\frac{{{r}_{1}}}{{{r}_{2}}}=\frac{2k}{k/2}=4\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[{{r}_{2}}=\frac{{{r}_{1}}}{4}=0.25{{r}_{1}}\]
