CET Karnataka Medical CET - Karnataka Medical Solved Paper-2015

  • question_answer
In presence of \[HCl\], \[{{H}_{2}}S\] results the precipitation of group-2 elements but not group-4 elements during qualitative analysis. It is due to

    A)  higher concentration of \[{{H}^{+}}\]

    B)  lower concentration of \[{{H}^{+}}\]

    C)  higher concentration of \[{{S}^{2-}}\]

    D)  lower concentration of \[{{S}^{2-}}\].

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: Dissociation of \[{{H}_{2}}S\] is suppressed in presence of \[HCl\] due to common ion effect. This decreases the \[{{S}^{2-}}\] ion concentration and hence, only group II radicals having low solubility product are precipitated.
