A small mesophytic twig with green leaves is dipped into water in a big beaker under sunlight. It demonstrates

    A)  photosynthesis

    B)  respiration

    C)  transpiration

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The loss of water vapour from aerial organs of living plants is called transpiration. The transpiration can be demonstrated by the help of Ganong's potometer. Select a healthy twig and cut it under water. Fill the apparatus with water and fix the twig. Make the apparatus air tight. An air bubble is inserted in horizontal tube and keep the apparatus in bright light. After few hours it is seen that the air bubble moves in the opposite direction. The rate of movement of air bubble will indicate the rate of transpiration.
