DNA strands are and parallel because

    A)  H-bonds

    B)  phosphate diester bonds

    C)  disulphide bonds

    D)  phosphate bonds

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The double helical structure of DNA was suggested by J D Watson and F H C Crick. Double helical structure forms ladder like structure. The two chains are complementary to each other, ie, the sequence of nucleotides in one chain dictates the sequence of nucleotides in the other. The two strands of DNA run an tiparalled, ie, in opposite direction. One strand has phosphodiester linkage in 5'\[\to \]3' direction, while the other strand has phosphodiester in just reverse 5'\[\to \]3' direction.
