One of the important effects of \[S{{O}_{2}}\] and its transformation products on plants is

    A)  plasmolysis

    B)  destruction of chlorophyll

    C)  destruction of Golgi bodies

    D)  destruction of cell wall

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Sulphur oxides mostly occur in the form of sulphur dioxide. It is produced in large quantity during smelling and metallic ores and burning of petroleum and coal in industries, thermal plants, home and motor vehicles. In air, \[S{{O}_{2}}\] combines with water to form sulphuric acid \[({{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}),\]which causes acid rain. It causes chlorosis and necrosis of vegetative in as low concentration. Besides chlorosis, \[S{{O}_{2}}\]causes membrane damage, metabolic inhibition, growth and yield reduction. Chlorosis results from destruction of chlorophyll, which is changed to phaeophytin.
