    Pour solutions A,B,C,D has glucose \[0.5\text{ }M,\] \[NaCl\text{ }0.1\text{ }M,\]\[BaC{{l}_{2}}\text{ }0.5\text{ }M\] and \[MgC{{l}_{2}}\text{ }0.1\text{ }M,\]then which of the following will have highest osmotic pressure?

    A)  Glucose

    B)  \[BaC{{l}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[MgC{{l}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[NaCl\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Molar concentration of glucose \[=0.5\text{ }M\] Molar concentration of \[NaCl=0.1\text{ }M\] Molar concentration of \[BaC{{l}_{2}}=0.5\text{ }M\]and molar concentration of \[MgC{{l}_{2}}=0.1M\] However as \[NaCl,\] \[BaC{{l}_{2}}\] and \[MgC{{l}_{2}}\] is an electrolyte. One mole of \[NaCl\] give two mole ions, therefore molar concentration of particles in the solution \[=0.2\text{ }M\] One mole of \[BaC{{l}_{2}}\] give three mole ions, therefore molar concentration of particles in the solution \[=1.5\text{ }M\]. and one mole of \[MgC{{l}_{2}}\] give three mole ions, therefore molar concentration of particles in solution \[=\text{0}.3M\]. As, osmotic pressure is directly proportional to the number of particles in the solution, hence, increasing order of osmotic pressure will be. \[Glucose<NaCl<MgC{{l}_{2}}<BaC{{l}_{2}}\]
