The rusting of iron is catalysed by

    A)  \[Fe\]

    B)  \[{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[{{H}^{+}}\]

    D)  \[Zn\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The reactions occurring during rusting process are as follows At anode:  \[Fe(s)\xrightarrow{{}}F{{e}^{2+}}(aq)+2{{e}^{-}}\] At cathode:  \[{{O}_{2}}(g)+4{{H}^{+}}(aq)+4{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}2{{H}_{2}}O\] The \[F{{e}^{2+}}\] ions, formed, are further oxidised by atmospheric oxygen to \[F{{e}^{3+}}\] (as \[F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\]) and come out as rust \[(F{{e}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}.x{{H}_{2}}O)\]. The \[{{H}^{+}},\] formed in the rust formation, catalysed the process of rusting.
