  • question_answer
A bullet of mass 10 g is fired from a gun of mass 1 kg with recoil velocity of gun is 5 m/s. The muzzle velocity will be

    A)  30 km/min

    B)  60 km/min

    C)  30 m/s

    D)  500 m/s

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                    Conservation of linear momentum gives, \[{{m}_{1}}{{v}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}}{{v}_{2}}=0\] \[{{m}_{1}}{{v}_{1}}=-\,{{m}_{2}}{{v}_{2}}\]     \[{{v}_{1}}=\frac{-{{m}_{2}}{{v}_{2}}}{{{m}_{1}}}\] Given : \[{{m}_{1}}=10g=\left( \frac{10}{1000} \right)\,kg,\,{{m}_{2}}=1\,kg,\] \[{{v}_{2}}=-\,5\,m\text{/}s\] \[\therefore \]  \[{{v}_{1}}=\frac{1\times 5}{10/1000}\] or            \[{{v}_{1}}=500\,m\text{/}s\]
