Which of the following commonly called emergency gland of body?

    A)  Thymus

    B)  Testis

    C)  Adrenal

    D)  Pituitary

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

As the sensory impulses of such strong stimuli called stressors, reach the brain, directly or through spinal cord, motor impulses of required responses are issued by hypothalamus to all organs, including adrenal medulla through the spinal cord. Consequently, norepinephrine is released simultaneously in all organs by sympathetic fibres, and large amount of both epinephrine and norepinephrine is poured into blood by adrenal medulla. This mass release of these hormones prepares the whole body within seconds. In this reaction the concerned person either boldly faces the emergency or tries some how to escape from it that it why it is called fight or flight reaction. Therefore, the adrenal gland is called as emergency gland of the body. Pituitary gland is called as master gland of the body because most of its hormones control the activity level of other endocrine glands. Thymus is haemopoietic as well as endocrine gland. It secretes thyroxin hormone. Testes contain interstitial cell or cells of Leydig which secretes various male hormones (androgens). The main androgen is testosterone.
