Adjacent epithelial cells are held together by means of

    A)  microsomes

    B)  liposomes

    C)  desmosomes

    D)  glyoxysomes

    E)  None of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Epithelia are predominantly cellular, their cells are closely placed rather contiguous with very little amount of cementing intercellular substance, which mainly composed of glycoproteins secreted by the cell themselves. To bear mechanical stresses that might disorganize an epithelium, the adjacent epithelial cells are laterally held together by means of zonula occludens, zonula adherens, macula adherens (desmosomes) and inter-digitations. Gtyoxysomes are found to occur in the cells of yeast, Neurospora and oil rich seeds of many higher plants. They have enzymes for fatty acid metabolism and gluconeogenesis. The membrane of endoplasmic reticulum disrupts to form closed vesicles of either a rough or a smooth form. These membranous entities were called as microsomes by Claude (1940).
