  • question_answer
Vapour pressure of \[CC{{l}_{4}}\] at \[25{}^\circ C\] is 143 mm of Hg and 0.5 g of a non-volatile solute (mol. wt. = 65) is dissolved in 100 mL \[CC{{l}_{4}}\,.\] Find the vapour pressure of the solution. (Density of\[CC{{l}_{4}}\,=1.58\,g\text{/}c{{m}^{3}}\]).

    A)  94.39 mm

    B)  141.93 mm

    C)  134.44 mm

    D)  199.34 mm

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

              Relative lowering in vapour pressure, \[\frac{p{}^\circ -{{p}_{s}}}{p{}^\circ }=\frac{w\times M}{m\times W}\] \[\frac{143-{{p}_{s}}}{143}=\frac{0.5}{65}\times \frac{154}{1.58\times 100}\] \[\left[ \begin{align}   & \because Molecular\text{ }weight\text{ }of\,CC{{l}_{4}}=154 \\  & \,\,\,\,\,and\text{ }weight=density\times volume \\ \end{align} \right]\] \[143-{{p}_{s}}=1.07\]\[\Rightarrow \]   \[{{p}_{s}}=141.93\,mm\]
