According to collision theory of bimolecular reactions,

    A)  the collision between all molecules lead to chemical reaction

    B)  chemical reaction will occur when collisions in which the molecules acquire energy is equal to activation energy

    C)  reactions in gas phase are always of zero order

    D)  rate directly proportional to number of collisions per second

    E)  collision is independent of temperature

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The collision theory states that ?             If two molecules are to react together, they must colloids with each other. ?             The collision between all molecules do not lead to chemical reaction. ?             The collisions in which the molecules acquire energy greater than the activation energy, results in chemical reaction. ?             The colliding molecules must possess certain minimum energy (threshold energy) to make the collision effective. The rate constant in accordance to collision theory\[k={{Z}_{AB}}\cdot {{E}^{{{E}_{a}}/RT}}\]where, \[{{Z}_{AB}}\]is collision frequency factor, i.e. the number of collisions between reactant molecules A and B per unit volume per unit time. Since, rate of the reaction depends upon rate constant, thus, rate is directly proportional to number of collisions per second.
