In order that the light reflected from the surface of a medium of refractive index a is plane polarized, the angle of incidence should be

    A)  \[{{\sin }^{-1}}(\mu )\]

    B)  \[{{\tan }^{-1}}(\mu )\]

    C)  \[{{\cot }^{-1}}(\mu )\]

    D)  \[{{\tan }^{-1}}\left( \frac{1}{\mu } \right)\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

According to Brewsfers, if light reflected from the medium is plane polarised. Then angle of incidence is called polarisation angle or the Brewsters angle. This polarisation angle (i) depends on the refractive index  of the medium. The tangent of the polarisation angle is equal to the refractive index of that reflection surface, ie, \[\mu =\tan i\] or            \[i={{\tan }^{-1}}(\mu )\]
