The ratio in which the \[xy-\]plane meets the line joining the points \[(-3,\,\,4,\,\,-8)\] and \[(5,\,\,-6,\,\,4)\]is

    A) \[2:3\]

    B) \[2:1\]

    C) \[4:5\]

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Let the point \[P\] be divides the line joining the points \[(-3,\,\,4,\,\,-8)\] and\[(5,\,\,-6,\,\,4)\]be\[\lambda :1\]. Then coordinates of\[P=\left( \frac{5\lambda -3}{\lambda +1},\,\,\frac{-6\lambda +4}{\lambda +1},\,\,\frac{4\lambda -8}{\lambda +1} \right)\] Since, the point \[P\] is lies in the \[xy-\]plane. Therefore, \[z-\]coordinate will be zero. \[ie,\]    \[\frac{4\lambda -8}{\lambda +1}=0\Rightarrow \lambda =2\] \[\therefore \]Required ratio is\[2:1\].
