  • question_answer
A mass of \[10\,\,g\] moving horizontally with a velocity of \[100\,\,cm{{s}^{-1}}\] strikes a pendulum bob of same mass. The two masses after collision stick together. What will be the maximum height reached by the system now? (Take\[g=10\,\,m{{s}^{-2}})\]

    A) \[zero\]

    B) \[1.25\,\,cm\]

    C)  \[2.5\,\,cm\]

    D)  \[5\,\,cm\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Kinetic energy of mass of 10 g is converted into potential energy of the system \[\therefore \]  \[\frac{1}{2}{{m}_{1}}v_{1}^{2}=({{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}})gh\] or            \[h=\frac{{{m}_{1}}v_{1}^{2}}{2({{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}})g}\]                 \[=\frac{10\times {{(100)}^{2}}}{2(10+10)\times 1000}=\frac{10\times 10000}{2\times 20\times 1000}\]                 \[=\frac{10}{4}=2.5\,\,cm\]
