Free martin is an example of:

    A)  hormonal controlled unlike sexed twins

    B)  sex reversal by gene

    C)  environmental control of sex

    D)  none of the above

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

When twins are produced in cattle one of them being male and the other female, the female is sterile whereas male is normal. These are known as Free martin after the name of the worker and would be produced only when there is a vascular connection between two embryos. The hormone perhaps suppresses the development of ovary in female. In majority of dioecious vertebrates and plant species sex is determined genetically. But in reptiles and some other texa, sex is determined by environmental factors such as temperature.
