    Seed coat is derived from:

    A)  pericarp

    B)  epicarp

    C)  integuments of ovule

    D)  nucellus

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

As a result of double fertilization in angiosperms the zygote and endosperm are formed. Zygote forms the embryo. The cells of the integument lose their protoplasm develop thick and impermeable walls and thus get transformed into seed coat. The seed coat is formed of outer testa and inner tegmen. Nucellus is the body of ovule which consists of a mass of parenchymatous cells. The tissue of the ovary wall is stimulated to grow with the development of seed and produces a fruit wall or pericarp. The pericarp may be distinguishable (as in drupe) into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp.
