Which of the following is a disaccharide?

    A)  Glucose

    B)  Fructose

    C)  Sucrose

    D)  Galactose

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Carbohydrates are aldehyde or ketone derivatives of higher polyhydric (more than one alcohol group) alcohols or as compounds  which yield these derivatives on hydrolysis. These are of three types: (i) Monosaccharides: These are simplest sugar and can be triose, tetroses, pentoses, hexoses and heptoses. e.g., Glycerose, ribose, glucose, fructose, galactose. (ii) Oligosaccharides: These are formed by glycosidic linkage of monosaccharides. The common isaccharides are sucrose (glucose and fructose), maltose (glucose and glucose), lactose (glucose and galactose.). (iii) Polysaccharides: These are polymers containing minimum ten monosaccharide units. These may be homopolysaccharides (cellulose, agar-agar) or heter  opolysaccharides        (hemicellulose, mucilage).
