    Alexander Flemming in 1929 discovered:

    A)  penicillin

    B)  streptomycin

    C)  tetracyclin

    D)  chloromycidn

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Penicillin was the first known antibiotic or an antimicrobial agent produced by Penicillin notatum and discovered by A. Flemming (1929). It is to be noted that about 2300 antibiotics have been discovered so far from various fungi. Of these nearly 123 have been extracted from Penicillium. Streptomycin is an antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces griseus (a soil bacterium) that binds specifically to bacterial 30S ribosomal sub-units, thereby blocking protein synthesis. Tetracyclin (auromycin) is isolated from Streptomyces aureofacieus. It is active against both Gram \[\text{+ve}\]and Gram \[-\text{ve}\]bacteria. Chloromycitin is isolated from Streptomyces griseus. It is active against both Gram \[+\text{ve}\]and \[-\text{ve}\]bacteria. It is generally used against typhoid.
