    Lichens are:

    A)  sporophyte

    B)  parasite

    C)  symbionts

    D)  predator

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Symbiont refers to organisms living in a state of symbiosis or mutualism, in which both the partners are benefitted with none of the two capable of living separately. Lichen is a composite thallophytic plant, composed of a  fungus in symbiotic union with an algae. It has a greenish, gray, yellow brown or blackish thallus growing as crust like, branching or leaf like forms on rocks, trees etc. Sporophyte refers to diploid plant, producing spores. It is an alternative to gametophyte. Parasite is an animal or plant that lives in or on an organism of another species (the host).  Parasite obtains nourishment from the body of host and may have temporary or permanent contact with the host. In parasite host relationship a weaker organism is benefitted. Predator is mostly an animal that capture, kill and eat up members of other species called as prey. In predator-prey relationship stronger organism is benefitted.
