In the phosphorus cycle, weathering makes phosphate available first to:

    A)  decomposers

    B)  consumers

    C)  producers

    D)  all of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Weathering is the breakdown of parent rock matter, mechanically or chemically by any agent into smaller particles. Since phosphorus is found in nature in soil, as rock phosphate in combination with other minerals, weathering releases phosphorus, occurring in the insoluble form. It is dissolved by the chemicals secreted by micro-organisms and plant roots. The dissolved phosphate is absorbed first by plants i.e., producers and changed to organic form. From plants, phosphorus travels to animals or  higher trophic levels along with food chain.
