The   phenomenon   'ontogeny   repeats 'phylogeny? is explained by:

    A)  natural selection

    B)  inheritance theory

    C)  mutation theory

    D)  recapitulation theory

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Recapitulation theory or Biogenetic law, was postulated by Ernst Haeckel in 1861. It states that the higher animals in their development pass through stages which are similar to the adult stages of lower ones i.e. 'Ontogeny recapitulates (repeats) phylogeny?. Theory of Natural Selection, proposed by ?Darwin', states that nature or the  environment acts as the selecting force to select those organisims, which are provided with the favourable variation. Thus, the organisms provided with favourable variations succeed in the struggle for existence. Inheritance   theory   or   Theory of inheritance of acquired characters was given by Lamarck. According to which, the characters acquired by the animal in response to environment, are transmitted to the offspring, generation to generation. Mutation theory proposed by Hugo de Vries, states that evolution is a jerky process where new varieties/species are formed by discontinuous variations or mutations that function as raw material of evolution.
