Which of the following is expected to have the highest value \[(gm/{{m}^{2}}/yr)\] in a grassland ecosystem?

    A)  Secondary Production (SP)

    B)  Tertiary Production (TP)

    C)  Gross Production (GP)

    D)  Net Production (NP)

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The rate of total capture of energy or the rate of total production of organic material is gross primary productivity while the balance or biomass remaining after meeting the cost of respiration of producers is net primary productivity. Hence, gross productivity has highest value in grassland ecosystem. Secondary productivity is the rate of energy storage at consumer level. Consumers tend to utilise already produced food materials in respiration and also convert the food matter to different tissues by an over, all process. So, secondary productivity is not divided into gross and net amounts. Net productivity is the rate of storage of organic matter not used by the heterotroph or consumers, ie, equal to NPP minus consumption by the heterotrophs during the unit period as a season or year.
