During   photorespiration,   the   oxygen consuming reaction(s) occur in

    A)  stroma of chloroplasts and mitochondria

    B)  stroma of chloroplasts and peroxisomes

    C)  grana of chloroplasts and peroxisomes

    D)  stroma of chloroplasts

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The first reaction of photorespiration occur in stroma of chloroplast. In this reaction the RuBP (Ribulose 1-5 biphosphate) consume one oxygen molecule in presence of enzyme Rubisco. In peroxisome the glycolate transferred from chloroplast takes up \[{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\] and formed the glyoxylate, whereas the \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\] release as byproduct.
