  • question_answer
A partition divides a container having insulated walls into two compartments. The same gas fills the two compartments (see figure). The ratio of the number of  molecules is compartments I and II is

    A)  1:6

    B)  1:6

    C)  4:1

    D)  1:4

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

     Using \[pV=nRT.\] We can write, \[{{p}_{I}}{{V}_{I}}={{n}_{I}}R{{T}_{I}}\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[pV={{n}_{1}}RT\] ?(i) Similarly, for compartment II \[{{p}_{II}}{{V}_{II}}={{n}_{II}}R{{T}_{II}}\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[(2p)(3V)={{n}_{II}}R(T)\] ?(ii) From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we have \[{{n}_{1}}RT=\frac{{{n}_{II}}RT}{6}\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[\frac{{{n}_{I}}}{{{n}_{II}}}=\frac{1}{6}\] or \[{{n}_{1}}:{{n}_{II}}=1:6\]
