Which among the following pairs of reagents will not give an ether?

    A)  \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}Br+{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}CONa\]

    B)  \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}Br+{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}ONa\]

    C)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}Br+{{C}_{3}}{{H}_{7}}ONa\]

    D)  \[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}Br+{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}ONa\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Alkyl halides gives ether, on treating with strong base (\[{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}ONa\] etc.). This is called Willamsons synthesis of ethers. Aryl halides does not give this reaction due to less reactivity for nucleophilic substitution.
