  • question_answer
A ray of light is incident at an angle of \[54{}^\circ \] on an equilateral prism, so that it suffers minimum deviation. The angle of minimum deviation is:

    A)  \[54{}^\circ \]

    B)  \[45{}^\circ \]

    C)  \[48{}^\circ \]

    D)         \[50{}^\circ \]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

From the relation for angle of deviation angle of incidence \[{{i}_{1}}\] and angle of emergence \[{{i}_{2}}\] are related by the equation \[{{i}_{1}}+{{i}_{2}}=A+\delta .\] The relation for minimum eviation \[{{\delta }_{m}}\] is \[{{i}_{1}}={{i}_{2}}=i\] So,          \[2i=A+{{\delta }_{m}}\]   or   \[{{\delta }_{m}}=2i-A\] \[=(2\times 54{}^\circ -60{}^\circ )=48{}^\circ \]
