A radioactive isotope has a half life of 10 days. If today there are 125 g of it left what was its original weight 40 days earlier?

    A)  2000 g

    B)  1250 g

    C)  1000g

    D)  600g

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     \[{{t}_{1/2}}=\]10 days\[\Rightarrow \]number of half life in 40 days \[=\frac{40}{10}=4\] Amount left after n half life \[=\frac{1}{{{2}^{n}}}=\frac{1}{{{2}^{4}}}=\frac{1}{16}\] If original amount is\[x,\]then \[\frac{1}{16}x=125\] \[x=\text{ }125\times 16\] \[=2000g.\]
