Which is the best description of behaviour of bromine in the reaction given below? \[{{H}_{2}}O+B{{r}_{2}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}HBr+HOBr\]

    A)  Proton accepted only

    B)  Both oxidised and reduced

    C)  Oxidised only

    D)  Reduced only

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In reaction, \[{{H}_{2}}O+\overset{0}{\mathop{B}}\,{{r}_{2}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}HO\overset{+1}{\mathop{Br}}\,+H\overset{-1}{\mathop{Br}}\,\] The oxidation number of bromine increases from 0 to\[+1\]and decreases from 0 to\[-1,\]so due to this reason bromine is both oxidised as well as reduced in the above reaction.
