NEET NEET SOLVED PAPER 2015 (C)

  • question_answer
Nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide have some properties in common. Which property is shown by one of these compounds, but not by the other?

    A)  Forms' acid-rain

    B)  Is a reducing agent

    C)  Is soluble in water

    D)  Is used as a food-preservative

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    (a) Nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide forms acid rain. 'Acid rain' is the rain water containing sulphuric acid and nitric acid. \[HN{{O}_{2}}\text{ }+\text{ }2{{H}_{2}}\text{O }+{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{\,}4HN{{O}_{3}}\] \[~2S{{O}_{2}}\text{ }+\text{ }2{{H}_{2}}\text{O }+\text{ }{{\text{O}}_{2}}\text{ }\xrightarrow{\,}\text{ }2{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] (b) \[N{{O}_{2}}\] and \[S{{O}_{2}}\] act as a good reducing agent e.g. \[S{{O}_{2}}\] reduces halogens to halogen acid \[C{{l}_{2}}+2{{H}_{2}}O+S{{O}_{2}}\to 2HCl+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]  (c)\[N{{O}_{2}}\] and \[S{{O}_{2}}\] both are soluble in water. (d) \[S{{O}_{2}}\] is used in the manufacture of sodium bisulphite (\[NaHS{{O}_{3}}\]) which is used as a preservative for jams, jellies and squashes.
