  • question_answer
What is the respective number of \[\alpha \] and \[\beta -\]particles emitted in the following radioactive decay?                 \[_{90}{{X}^{200}}{{\xrightarrow{{}}}_{80}}{{X}^{168}}\]

    A) \[8\alpha ,\,\,8\beta \]

    B) \[8\alpha ,\,\,6\beta \]

    C) \[6\alpha ,\,\,6\beta \]

    D) \[6\alpha ,\,\,8\beta \]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

As it is clear that the emission of a and \[\beta -\]particles can be shown by the relation,                 \[_{Z}{{X}^{A}}{{\xrightarrow{-\alpha }}_{Z-2}}{{X}^{A-4}}\] and        \[_{Z}{{X}^{A}}{{\xrightarrow{-\beta }}_{Z+1}}{{X}^{A}}\] Hence, for a radioactive decay \[8\alpha \] and \[6\beta -\]particles would be emitted.
